The distinction between Charlotte Water service and private well water in surrounding counties is significant. Union County, directly east of Charlotte, sits on Piedmont crystalline rock and sedimentary formations that contribute higher mineral loads to groundwater compared to the Catawba reservoir sources. Many Union County wells test in the moderately hard to hard range (60 to 180 mg/L), compared to Charlotte Water's 32 mg/L.
