Raleigh and most Triangle municipalities use chloramines for disinfection. Unlike chlorine, chloramines require carbon block filtration to remove — standard filters are not sufficient.
Homes built before 1986 may have lead pipes or lead solder. Durham and older Charlotte neighborhoods are among the highest-risk areas in the state.
